BT Habitat for Humanity participates in Collegiate Challenge
In June, Mr. Morzen, Mrs. Birth, Fr. Bob Frederick and 14 students from the BT Habitat for Humanity Club traveled to Spruce Pinces, NC for our summer Collegiate Challenge trip. Spruce Pines is in a beautiful mountain area outside of Asheville and part of the Mitchell Yancey Habitat affiliate. We kicked off our trip with a Mass in the BT Chapel on Father’s Day with the families of the participants, along with President Marks and his family, Ms. Lancaster and Mr. Villacura.
Our work included painting and finishing touches on a house where some of our group got to work side by side with the family that will be living there. In addition, our group worked at a food pantry, organized a thrift store, helped out at an animal shelter, and worked on projects at the Habitat ReStore. Our final project was demolition of an old playground at Spruce Pines Methodist Church who provided us with classrooms for lodging during the week.
Aside from our good work in the area we found time to take in some of the beautiful hikes, including Mount Mitchell which is the highest peak in the southeast! Fr. Bob celebrated daily Mass and offered the sacrament of Reconciliation and we had nightly reflections led by the teens which all gave our summer build a retreat-like feel.
We returned to BT on Friday, June 21st, tired from a full week of work and activity but better and blessed because of it.
