2007 State Championship
For the 2007 Lady Titans, the road to Columbus began at Lanier Pointe Park in Gainesville, Ga. for Sectional playoffs. The Titans defeated Pickens Co. (5-1) in the first Friday night game and then went on to defeat Elbert Co. (4-0). Knowing they were only one game away from their third consecutive trip to Columbus for the Elite 8, the Titans came ready to play Saturday and defeated Lumpkin Co. (2-0). These three wins at Sectionals improved their winning streak to 23 games and earned them position E in Columbus.
The Titans opened up in Columbus against Hardaway. Maddy Stanton hit a solo homerun in the top of the 5th inning, giving the Titans a 1-0 lead. This wasn’t enough, however, as the Lady Hawks came back to tie up the game in the bottom of the 7th inning. Blessed Trinity battled it out in extra innings until the top of the 10th inning when Katie Hawkins broke open the game with a two run double to right/center field. The Titans held them in the bottom of the 10th inning and went on to win 5-2.
Later that evening, Blessed Trinity faced Harris Co., who had handed the Titans a 6-0 loss the previous season in Columbus. Amber Hamilton was dominant on the mound, giving up only three hits and striking out seven. Jessica Gatchalian hit a sacrifice fly to score Macy Terry in the bottom of the 4th inning and this was enough as the Titans went on to win 1-0. Just one game away from playing for the Title, the Lady Titans faced Sandy Creek on Friday night. The Titans jumped off to a great start scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. They continued to be dominant at the plate, being led by Katie Hawkins (3 for 4), Maddy Stanton (2 for 4) and Moira Sullivan (2 for 4). They went on to win it 6-2, but the Titans weren’t done yet.
Before going to bed on Friday night, the Titans broke to a huddle, screaming, “Win it all!” They came Saturday morning ready to do just that. Facing Sandy Creek again in the Championship, the Titans were trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Sammy Lepionka led off with a bunt. Amber Hamilton drove her in on a hit to right field and the game was tied at 1. In the bottom of the 5th inning, it was Amber Hamilton again who pulled through with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Moira Sullivan. The Titans had the lead at 2-1. Amber Hamilton fought hard on the mound for two more innings before striking out her seventh batter of the game for the last out and the first State Championship for Blessed Trinity!
