Blessed Trinity senior, Amanda Martinez, has been awarded first place in the first annual Ivan Allen Civic Responsibility Essay Contest sponsored by the Ivan Allen Liberal Arts School of Georgia Tech.

Students were asked to write an essay about a great civic leader in the southern U.S. whom they felt embodied the late Atlanta Mayor’s civic leadership as well as his willingness to sacrifice personal interests for the good of the community. Amanda chose to write her essay on the present Atlanta mayor, Shirley Franklin.

“Shirley Franklin stuck out in my mind because of all the wonderful things she has done for our state capital,” said Amanda.

Of the 100 entries received from juniors and seniors nationwide, Amanda won first place for in the senior grade category, which included two trophies and two plaques, a set for her to keep and a set for the school to display. Amanda also received $500 and will collect another $500 if she decides to enroll at GT, which she plans to do while majoring in International Affairs and Spanish.
